As we all consider the environment more responsibly these days you now have an organic environmentally friendly choice in material for your hammock through organic cotton. Cotton, in general, is a very popular choice for hammocks due to the excellent benefits of softness, moisture absorption, and comfort. Organic cotton similarly has all the benefits of regular cotton but is better for the end user, the people cultivating it and the environment as well. No chemical substances are used in the production of organic cotton making it very soft to the skin and also perfect for products intended for children, babies and those with sensitive skin.
Organic cotton is produced according to ecological principles, helping to go easy on the environment and resources.
Organic cotton can be grown anywhere where standard cotton can be grown. However, before a conventionally treated field can be used for growing organic products the farmland must be used for at least three years without the use of and free of chemicals according to ecological principles. Only after this period of decontamination can the cultivated crop be allowed to be called organic cotton.
There are clear specifications in the use and selection of seeds. The use of genetically engineered seeds for the cultivation of organic cotton is strictly prohibited. Through crop rotation monocultures are prevented which in turn helps maintains the ecological balance of the soil in a natural way.
The most important difference between standard cotton and organic cotton is that organic products are only fertilised by organic means. No herbicides, chemical fertilisers, or insecticides can be used in any way. This means not only the farmland but the whole ecosystem (ground water, animals, and us) are protected.
Generally both cotton and organic cotton need the same amount of time to grow and mature. This is around five to nine months. When it comes time to harvest though conventional cotton is machine harvested whereas organic cotton is handpicked.
The certification of our organic hammocks guarantees the seeds are GE free and that no chemicals have been used during their growth. All the various steps, processes and production of organic cotton (ginnery, spinning mill, weaving mill, dye factory, etc.) are certified. Unfortunately, the cultivation of organic cotton can be a more costly process in financial terms. For those companies also processing conventional cotton this adds a lot additional costs: separate storage, special machine cleaning even separate bookkeeping requirements. As such the price of organic cotton hammocks will generally be higher.
The organic hammocks on offer through Hammock Shop all meet the requirements described and through our supplier are certified by Control Union, an internationally acclaimed certification company, according to the OE 100 standard.
